A pelagic fish, found particularly in shallow, temperate waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans, including the Baltic Sea. Atlantic Herring can reach up to 46cm, while Baltic Herring is smaller and is around 14 to 22cm. Herring has been called the ‘silver of the sea’ and is widely used for salting, smoking, marinating and pickling.
